Would you like to be a mentor? If so, the Move-Up Program at Jubilee Jobs needs you! |
| Jubilee Jobs applicants who have proven themselves by working successfully
in an entry-level job at least six months are invited to apply to the
Move-Up Program. Guided by a Move-Up counselor, each applicant develops
a plan to move into a more career-oriented position over time. The mentor
program is a critical part of the Move-Up process. Now you can become
one of those mentors and help to open new horizons for those uncertain
about how to move forward in a complex world.
Following a short introductory training program, Move-Up Program Mentors are matched with individual applicants, whom they contact on a weekly basis and arrange to meet in person at least two times a month. Encouragement and accountability are at the core of the mentor’s role. Areas where our applicants desire growth and guidance include goal-setting, improving written and spoken English skills, increasing computer literacy, and developing a sense of financial responsibility and literacy through budgeting and saving. Founded on mutual respect and friendship as well as a desire for progress for the applicant, the mentoring relationship can produce tremendous results in the lives of the Move-Up applicants. Attributes needed in a volunteer mentor include: a capacity for listening in a nonjudgmental way; a familiarity with the marketplace and a professional manner; an enthusiasm for meeting new people and making friends from diverse backgrounds; a willingness and ability to take the lead in the ‘boss’ position, even as friendship evolves with the applicant. The most important requirement for the mentor is a willingness to share his or her unique voice, gained from experiences in various spheres of life, which can range from the role of professional to that of life manager. Such guidance proves invaluable to a move-up applicant, as he or she maneuvers through the intricacies of the marketplace. As mentor you will serve on a team, working alongside the applicant to further his or her growth. In the process, you will gain new insights about yourself and the interconnectedness of our community, even as you dispel the myth of “pulling one’s self up by one’s bootstraps.” If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Move-Up Program Mentor, please contact: Jennifer Urquhart |
